Community

This focus area offers strategies to understand which communities are most impacted by lead exposure and poisoning, and to work with community leaders and organizations to increase awareness of lead poisoning and emphasize the need for lead poisoning assessments and prevention.

Prevention & Remediation

Action 1

Provide educational outreach on lead poisoning risks at community centers.

Give education and outreach materials to hardware stores, daycares, Head Start centers, Baby Cafés, community-wide events and health fairs. Here is an example of outreach material.
Develop and place educational ads in local magazines and news sites.

Action 2

Target high-risk areas with lead prevention resources.

Provide funding to local health departments for educational resources and programs as they are more familiar with community-level needs.
Develop and mail educational postcards on lead testing and prevention.

Identification & Exposure

Create a map of lead exposures (include zip code, age of housing, regional airports).
